Some dishes are the star of the show, and some make everything else taste better. Our Chinese bread is one of the latter.
What Chinese bread is
In China it's called mantou, and it's everyday bread: a soft, white steamed bun. The traditional recipe is very simple: flour, yeast, water and a little sugar. Once fried, it turns golden and crispy on the outside and stays soft inside.
Why people order it
It's the perfect partner for dishes with sauce. A piece of bread to mop up the sweet and sour sauce from the ribs, the prawn curry or whatever is left at the bottom of a wok is simply delicious. It's one of those dishes that lands on the table and disappears in a minute.
How it's eaten in China
In China, fried mantou is also eaten as a dessert or afternoon snack, dipped in condensed milk. The mix of crispy, fluffy and sweet is addictive. Here we serve it as a side, but if you ever go to China, try it that way.
We also offer it gluten-free, so nobody at the table misses out on mopping up the sauce.
